The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office is stressing the importance of  wearing life jackets if you're beating the heat by taking to Yolo's waterways

Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Persons says, "The benefits of wearing a life jacket are obvious.

"When properly fitted and worn, life jackets can save lives." In fact, says Persons, hundreds of lives a year could be saved in the United States if boaters and rafters and their passengers took proper precautions and wore properly fitted life jackets.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly 85 percent of boating/rafting-related fatalities in the United States involve victims who were not wearing a life jacket, .

West Nile warning for Yolo County

With school out, West Sacramento families are hiking, biking, swimming, camping and otherwise spending more time outdoors. Hot weather risks include an increase in mosquito activity and the possibility you will be bitten by a mosquito infected with West Nile Virus.

In the Sacramento region, both birds and mosquitoes are testing positive for the virus. If a person is bitten and becomes infected, in rare cases he or she can develop a serious neurologic illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The California Department of Public Health reports one human case so far this year in Sacramento County.

News10 My Neighborhood ran a week-long sweepstakes contest last week.

We asked our vusers to submit their definition of HOOPLA, and when they did, their names were automatically submitted into a random drawing.  Then, four lucky winners would receive four passes each to Golfland SunSplash.

This dictionary quiz sweepstakes contest was inspired as part of News10's Reading Connects campaign which is all about connecting with our community to help improve the literacy rate.

Well, we received over 90 responses, and some people were thoughtful enough to email us a sentence with the word HOOPA in it.  Here are some examples:
