Alum gives record $2M gift to UC Davis Athletics

DAVIS - A UC Davis alumnus who says that some of his most powerful college experiences took place on the athletics field has made a $2 million commitment to Intercollegiate Athletics -- the largest single philanthropic contribution to athletics in the university's 102-year history.

Bruce Edwards, together with his wife, Diane, made the gift to support Aggie Stadium. Edwards is a 1960 graduate who played football and ran track for UC Davis.

Rock opera 'The Who's Tommy' opens at UC Davis

DAVIS - The UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Who’s Tommy directed by Granada Artist-in-Residence Mindy Cooper with music and lyrics by Pete Townshend.  This hit musical, winner of five Tony Awards, is based on The Who's 1969 double album rock opera Tommy. The famous show revolves around young English Tommy who becomes deaf, dumb and blind after witnessing a murder as a boy, and later rises to fame as a pinball wizard.

UC Davis Symphony Orchestra to perform 'Family Concert' June 2

DAVIS - On Thursday, June 2, at 7:00 p.m., in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center, the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra will perform a program organized for a family evening. The "Family Concert" program lasts only an hour, and does not have an intermission. Featured are winners of the symphony’s Concerto Competition (Han-ah Sumner) and Composition Readings (Gabriel Bolaños):

• Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3
• Bolaños: Cerro Negro
• Beethoven: Allegro moderato from Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, with Han-ah Sumner, piano
• Strauss: Emperor Waltz

Han-ah Sumner regularly plays cello with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, but will be performing the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major.

UC Davis Jazz Bands to perform 'Guests Artists' May 25

DAVIS - On Wednesday, May 25, at 7:00 p.m., in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center, the UC Davis Jazz Bands will perform a program titled “Guest Artists.” Two bands will be directed by Delbert Bump: a larger “big band” and a smaller “combo” band.

Composer, arranger, and saxophonist Gregory Yasinitsky will perform with the ensemble in several pieces, including three pieces of his own. He is an accomplished musician, and has performed with Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Louis Bellson, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme, and many others. In June, Yasinitsky will become director for the Washington State University School of Music, where he is currently a Regents Professor of Music.

Other guests include Carlos Medrano on congas, and Tim Acosta, trumpet.
