15-minute-old newborn gets pacemaker for heart

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The name Jaya in Hindi means victorious.

And Jaya Maharaj was just that, as she became one of the smallest-ever recipients of a pacemaker when she was 15 minutes old.

Doctors at Stanford University's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital determined the girl born nine weeks premature had only hours to live if they did not operate. Stanford announced details of the operation this week.

Jaya was born with a heart rate of 45 beats per minute. A health newborn heartbeat is 120 to 150 beats per minute.

Dr. Katsuhide Maeda stitched the pacemaker's electrical leads to 3.5-pound Jaya's walnut-sized heart. He says she would otherwise have died.

Other doctors say the surgery was one of the most impressive of its kind and could lead more hospitals to attempt the procedure.

Heart Sugar Cookies

Heart Sugar Cookies

I keep seeing red and pink hearts everywhere – in store displays, on Pinterest, and all over the blogosphere. That can only mean one thing: it’s almost Valentine’s Day. I know that some people hate this holiday but I figure at the least it’s an excuse to eat something sweet. At it’s best, it’s a time to celebrate love and show your loved ones how much you care and appreciate them. Either way you look at Valentine’s, this recipe will work for you. You can bake some cookies for yourself to enjoy and/or share them with your friends and family. It’s a win-win.

Can a Davis family go 1 month without spending a dime?

Can a Davis family go 1 month without spending a dime?

DAVIS, CA - It started as an idea for a Davis family of six, that quickly developed a life of its own.

The Dunnings took a vow to stop spending money, not a single dime, for the month of February.

"We were bothered about how much money we spent over the holidays and on a day to day basis, stuff we didn't really need," parent Shelley Dunning said.

Shelley decided to go all the way with the experiment, So on Jan. 31, they went shopping for a lot of groceries.

Shelley said the family will be eating a lot of beans, rice and frozen meat. The only thing the family plans to spend money on is fresh milk for the kids.

The Dunnings are also walking everywhere instead of driving.

Usually I’m pretty on top of holiday shopping and try to start early in the season so it’s not stressful. This year, I was not on top of it – last week I suddenly realized that there were only 2 weeks left to Christmas and I had barely bought any presents! I scrambled to get things together and actually got the majority of my shopping done (I am so thankful for online shopping!).
