Winter Gardening Class December 8

Attention Yolo County winter gardeners and garden enthusiasts!  The Hanna and Herbert Bauer Community Garden in Woodland is hosting a class entitled, “Build a Healthy Plate and a Healthy Body with your Winter Garden” on Monday, December 8, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.  This indoor class is free and open to all; no gardening experience necessary.

This class, taught by Yolo County Health Services Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention staff, will help participants learn to incorporate winter vegetables into a healthy diet and will also provide tips on how to include yoga-based stretches into fitness routines to stay healthy and fit for gardening.  The class will highlight winter vegetables that grow well in Yolo County, include a taste of some winter vegetable dishes and include recipes to take home.

Attention Yolo County gardeners and garden enthusiasts!  The Hanna and Herbert Bauer Community Garden in Woodland is hosting a class entitled, “Cover Cropping for Better Spring Soil” on Wednesday, October 22, 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.  The class is free and open to all.

This class, taught by David Linebarger, garden assistant and graduate from the UC Davis Sustainable Agriculture Department, will help participants understand what cover crops are, the types of plants that make ideal cover crops for fall and winter in our region, and how to use cover crops to improve your soil.  Cover cropping is a great low-maintenance technique for getting your soils ready for spring and summer plants.

The community garden program is committed to offering garden-based technique and nutrition classes to help the community grow fresh food and live healthier lives.

The Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 East 14th Street in Davis, welcomes the Yolo County Master Gardeners on Sunday, October 19, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Blanchard Room.  Specialists will be on-hand highlighting lawn removal, growing garlic and onions, and dividing perennials.

“Master Gardeners are our go-to experts for our home gardens and fall is a great time for gardening,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong.  “Come and ask a question!”

No reservations are required.  The Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library is accessible for persons with disabilities.  Presented by the Yolo County Library, all programs free.

Ever wonder what happens to all those fields of sunflowers?  Come to the Winters Community Library on Wednesday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. to find out! 

This exciting, 45-minute program, Sunflower Power, is guaranteed to inspire kids to eat their veggies.  Presented by the Food Literacy Center of Sacramento, kids ages 5 to 12 will learn about all the parts of the sunflower through a hands-on craft and a food activity. 

Sponsored by the generous support of the Winters Friends of the Library, this event is free.  The Winters Community Library is located at 708 Railroad Avenue in Winters.

Grow with the Gardeners at the Library

The Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 East 14th Street in Davis, welcomes the Yolo County Master Gardeners on Sunday, September 21, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Blanchard Room.

Volunteers from Yolo County Master Gardeners will answer your questions and provide helpful information about gardening in drought conditions.  This month’s topics include colorful container gardening, edible and ornamental gardening, gardening for all abilities, and easy fall planting.

“Master Gardeners provide research-based information and assistance to home gardeners,” said Patty Wong, Yolo County Librarian.  “Come and ask a question!”

September Gardening Class & Anniversary Celebration

The Hanna and Herbert Bauer Memorial Community Garden will host two garden events in September, both free, sponsored by Yolo County Health Services Department and open to all.

On Saturday, September 6, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., expert canner Rick Boyd will be teaching a class on preserving tomatoes from the garden.  This class will cover the basics of water bath canning, making sauces and making tomato jam.  Pre-registration is required by noon on September 5.

Yolo County will celebrate the garden’s one-year anniversary on Friday, September 19, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The celebration will feature fresh foods from the garden, a showcase of garden successes in the past year and an opportunity to learn about the various activities and programs the garden offers.  Join the garden staff, community gardeners, Yolo County leaders and community supporters for this festive event.  RSVP preferred.

August 2 Fall Gardening Class at the Community Garden

Attention Yolo County gardeners and garden enthusiasts!  The Hanna and Herbert Bauer Community Garden is hosting a free “Gardening 101: soil, water and fall planting” class on Saturday, August 2, at 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in the garden adjacent to 137 N. Cottonwood Street in Woodland.

This class, taught by the David Linebarger, garden intern and graduate from the UC Davis sustainable agriculture department, will help participants understand the basics of creating good soil, watering techniques that help conserve water and maximize benefit to the plants, and how to prepare for planting their fall crops.  No gardening experience is necessary and all are welcome to attend.  Participants will also have an opportunity to harvest fresh produce being grown in the demonstration area of the garden.
