Chocolate Nutella Cupcakes

Chocolate Nutella Cupcakes

Hey, remember when I said I’d be posting healthy recipes in July? Ha! Since then I’ve shared recipes for mojito popsicles, chocolate cupcakes, blood orange sorbet, and now chocolate Nutella cupcakes (also, next up: carrot cake cupcakes). So, lesson learned: don’t listen to me and don’t expect anything healthy when you visit this blog!

Blood orange sorbet

Blood orange sorbet

Happy Friday! I realized that I mentioned this blood orange sorbet in the blood orange popsicle post and then never shared it with you all! Whoops…so here a refreshing send off to your weekend – a colorful and flavorful sorbet. Hope you stay cool where ever you are!

This is the final blood orange recipe until next winter...

'Better than sex' chocolate cupcakes

'Better than sex' chocolate cupcakes

…I think the title says it all. These cupcakes actually live up to their lofty name. The cake part is really moist with a strong chocolate flavor, and topping them with dark chocolate ganache and a drizzle of white chocolate simply puts them over the top...

Woodland Tomato Festival set for Aug. 13

Woodland Tomato Festival set for Aug. 13

WOODLAND - Tomatoes are an important part of Yolo County's local heritage and are well worthy of celebration. The Woodland Tomato Festival steering committee announced the 4th annual Tomato Festival will arrive Saturday, August 13.

Yolo County Tomatoes account for more than $100 million dollars in agricultural production annually. More than 40,000 acres of commercial tomatoes are planted each year with countless more in the backyards of Woodlanders everywhere.

Held every year at Freeman Park on Main Street in downtown Woodland, from 9 a .m. - 2 p.m., the festival features family fun for all ages. From the live performances and free tomato tasting to the “Best Salsa in Town” restaurant competition, it is a whirlwind of tomato fun.

“As Yolo County Master Gardeners, one of the things we like doing the most is to participate in the Woodland Tomato Festival” says Master Gardener Steve Radosevich.

Mojito popsicles

Mojito popsicles

Oh my goodness, I tweeted about making these and got a lot of response. Apparently booze + popsicles is a very popular idea, and that shouldn’t be a big surprise. After all, if you’re in the northern hemisphere odds are that it’s hot where you are. Doesn’t sitting by the pool with a cocktail sound good? Freeze that drink and doesn’t it sound great?! (Just remember to stay hydrated.)

These refreshing popsicles are filled with the classic mojito ingredients: mint, rum, lime, sugar and club soda. I was curious to see how the carbonation in the club soda would freeze, but I couldn’t really tell a difference in the popsicles. You could probably use plain water instead and I bet it would be similar. Enjoy by the pool for optimal results!

Patriotic Mini Pavlovas

Patriotic Mini Pavlovas

I hope you had a great 4th of July! What did you do to celebrate? And, to my international friends, did you do anything fun this weekend?

My awesome Australian friend Susie came over and we whipped up a traditional Australian dessert. And then promptly made it American with red and blue fruit. Although, the Australian flag is also red, white and blue, so maybe we just paid homage to the wrong country…
