Public Health & Wellness Fair April 6

The community is invited to the annual Public Health & Wellness Fair on Wednesday, April 6 from noon to 3:00 p.m.  This free, family-friendly event includes car seat inspections and old car seat recycling, bike safety and skills activities, health check screenings (blood pressure, BMI (body mass index), cholesterol), sidewalk CPR activities, healthy food samples, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccines, and much more.

The fair is in celebration of National Public Health Week, April 4-10, and is sponsored by the Yolo County Health & Human Services Agency Community Health Branch.

The Public Health & Wellness Fair will be held in the parking lot on the southeast corner of Beamer and Cottonwood streets in Woodland.  In the event of rain, the fair will be moved across the street to Norton Hall at 70 Cottonwood Street.

Can you believe it has been five year since the renovation of Yolo County’s Mary L. Stephens Branch Library in Davis?  Come help us celebrate on Saturday, December 12 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.!

All are invited to this special event which highlights the importance and evolution of the Davis Branch Library.  The celebration will include a Library Services Fair from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Blanchard Room, library fact game with a gift basket raffle, ‘Library Love Letters’ display, Yolo County Library history exhibit, tours and more.  First 5 California will also have a booth set up with free giveaways and activities highlighting the nationally acclaimed ‘Talk, Read, Sing’ program.

Special guests include City of Davis Poet Laureate Andy Jones, who will be Master of Ceremonies, and former County Librarian Mary Stephens-Dewall.

Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Invites Families to Celebrate Birth Center Anniversary

The Family Birth Center at the Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center is turning two this year. If you are among the 2,200 families who welcomed a baby to your family with us since we opened, you are cordially invited to the celebration.

The open house event will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the medical center, located at One Quality Drive in Vacaville.

Some physicians and staff from the Family Birth Center will be there and are excited to see how your little ones have Thrived.Families can enjoy games, giveaways, a photo booth and take home a special keepsake of your child’s footprint.

The following special programs will be held during the month of December at Yolo County’s Esparto Regional Library, located at 17065 Yolo Avenue in Esparto:

  • December 8: Mad Science of Sacramento Valley: Fire and Ice, 3:15 p.m.  Children will be dazzled at this spectacular show by dry ice storms, the whoosh of a fiery jet ‘engine’ and a Mad Science burp-flavored potion! 
  • December 15: Afternoon Movie, 3:00 p.m.  All children and their families are invited to view a family-friendly or teen appropriate movie (G, PG or PG-13) at the library.  For movie title call (530) 787-3426.

Equity Summit Series: Children & Family Poverty November 19

Join the Yolo County Library, Yolo County Office of Education and the UC Davis Center for Regional Change for the second of four presentations in the Yolo County Education & Equity Summit Series on November 19 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the City Hall Galleria, located at 1110 West Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento.

The November 19 presentation focus of Children & Family Poverty will be presented by M. Anne Visser, Ph.D., assistant professor for the UC Davis Department of Human Ecology.  Dr. Visser studies the forms of social, economic and political exclusion (such as poverty, citizenship status, race, class and gender) that result in inequality and social stratification.  Her work includes studying the impacts of these inequities on young people and the capacity of government policy and civil society to address socioeconomic inequality in the United States and abroad.
