Midtown Association continues elevated efforts to find solutions for local homeless

Committed to fostering a center for culture, creativity and vibrancy in Sacramento’s urban core, the Midtown Association recently increased its already diligent efforts to connect those facing homelessness with much-needed services to get them off the streets and into stable supported living situations. During the month of March 2018, the Midtown Association added three additional layers to its suite of education, networking and outreach services that resulted in the placement of two previously homeless individuals in housing situations and the coordination of multiple networking successes that pave the way for future progress.

  • In a new partnership and with the support of Sacramento Steps Forward, the Midtown Association combined the efforts of navigators from One Community Health (formerly CARES) and Dignity Health along with the Sutter Street Nurse and the city’s IMPACT team to create a Special Projects Outreach Team that walked the district as a group every Friday morning in March to make assessments and connect those in need with available services and resources.  As a direct result of this effort, two formerly homeless individuals in Midtown where connected with housing solutions and one more housing placement is pending. This elevated team approach will continue every Friday at least through the month of April.
  • Also in March, the Midtown Association hosted a targeted networking reception with local realtors and real estate professionals designed to share information about the mission of Sacramento Self-Help Housing and how the real estate community can provide much-needed and mutually-beneficial housing solutions to help those facing homelessness in our community.  As a result, a number of local influencers attended, many of whom committed to donating their time, furniture or funds to support the mission; two signed up to volunteer; one attendee has offered to donate time to help with agency programming; and one individual expressed interest in providing a home to lease to Sacramento Self Help Housing that will one day house currently homeless individuals.
  • In late March, the Midtown Association coordinated a mixer with Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness to share information and provide training about the little known Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC).  As a result, 30 local businesses attended and learned more about a federal tax credit available to employers who hire individuals from the eligible target groups with significant barriers to employment.  Additionally, the Midtown Association has created a user-friendly Employment Resources section on www.exploremidtown.org website to share local hiring resources, including information on the WOTC and Volunteers for America. Individuals can also apply for programs or send inquiries to the program management from the website. In the future, information about upcoming job fairs will be added to this page.

“The Midtown Association is doing everything we can to support and further the concept of wrap-around care to help get those facing homelessness in our community off the streets and into stable and productive living situations,” said Emily Baime Michaels, Executive Director of the Midtown Association. “We’re very proud of our elevated and multi-tiered team approach in March, and plan to continue our diligent efforts to help address this dire situation.”

Looking forward, the Midtown Association will continue the weekly Special Projects Outreach Team efforts for at least another month, has added a new navigator to the team, and plans to explore more strategic partnerships and support cause-related events and programming that further these goals, a few of which include the following:

  • The Midtown Association is proud to partner with the Homeless Employment Advocacy Committee (HEAC) to sponsor and promote the Salvation Army’s “Hiring Day” coming up on June 1, 2018, where employers from around the Sacramento region will connect applicants with a wide variety of jobs available.
  • The Midtown Association is actively promoting Work for Warriors, a state and federally funded free job placement program in California that is designed to assist post 9/11 veterans, active National Guard, active reserve members, spouses, and Gold Star families in finding civilian employment.

Lastly, the Midtown Association is currently working with Street Soccer USA Sacramento to develop and launch proactive summertime events at Fremont Park. The Midtown Association is proud to partner with this organization that supports individuals exiting homelessness and overcoming addiction.
