Fearful, reactive, unruly or just too rambunctious – does this describe your dog?

Yolo County’s Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 East 14th Street in Davis, welcomes veterinarian, animal behaviorist and author, Dr. Sophia Yin, for a speaking engagement on Wednesday evening, January 22, 5:30 to 9:00 p.m.  Dr. Yin will present two back-to-back lectures: “Teaching Fido to Learn to Earn: developing leadership in humans and impulse control in dogs” and “Help! My Dog Barks and Lunges at Other Dogs!: how to handle your fearful or reactive dog”.

Dr. Yin will present foundation exercises for dogs and dog owners to practice in her “Learn to Earn” program.  Dogs will learn impulse control and to look to humans for guidance.  In her follow-up lecture, Dr. Yin will present a comprehensive plan for helping fearful or reactive dogs overcome their behavioral problems through desensitization and counter conditioning training.  At the end of the evening owners will understand how to successfully use these exercises to help their dog when overreacting to other dogs, people, sounds or veterinarians.  Participants will learn the connection between aggression, fear and inadequate socialization, and how to read a dog’s body language to avoid worse behavior.  This workshop will help owners gain the skills and knowledge necessary to help their dogs overcome behavioral problems and reach their potential.

Dr. Yin currently works at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, writes for several veterinary and popular magazines, makes animal behavior house calls and has consulted for several zoos.  She also lectures and teaches workshops internationally on animal behavior and low stress handling, and has served as a behavior expert for television shows such as “Dogs 101” on Animal Planet.  Dr. Yin is the author of numerous books and publications.  Book signings and sales will follow her presentations.

The program will be held in the Blanchard Room of the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, which is accessible for persons with disabilities.  No reservations are required and the program is free.  For more information about this program, contact Joan Tuss at joan.tuss@yolocounty.org.  For more information about the Yolo County Library, visit: www.yolocountylibrary.org, or connect with the Yolo County Library on Facebook at www.facebook.com/yolocountylibrary.org.
